Charlie says: "Who me? Dietary indescretion?" |
|
Charlie Tranter, a 10 year old neutered male Lab/Springer, was presented 2 years ago with a history of eating steak bones
and becoming constipated. An impaction of bones and hard feces was removed rectally under sedation. One year later after another episode of dietary indiscretion
he was again presented with another impaction. This time a ballooning of one side of the rectal wall indicated the development of a hernia through the muscles lateral (along side) the rectum.
Over the next several months his owners tried to maintain Charlie on stool softeners and the occasional enema. The hernia enlarged to the size of a baseball and became medically unmanageable.
His only option for relief was surgery. Because of the large defect a relatively new technique was performed where the fascia of a pelvic bone is elevated and
incorporated into a muscular patch to hold his hernia in place. Today Charlie is off all medication and is doing well. "Doggie Bag" meals have also been eliminated from his diet.
