December 2001 Pet of the Month Dozer Dozer, a seven-month-old English Bulldog,
was originally presented for vaccination and dermatitis. Bulldogs commonly have skin folds on their faces, but Dozer also had skin folds at the base of his tail. In the creases of these skin folds dirt and
moisture collected which caused a constant infection and a very strong odor. On Dozer's first visit to Heritage Animal Hospital he was started on oral antibiotics
and a daily routine of cleaning the skin folds with an antiseptic scrub. This helped Dozer's condition considerably, but it was obvious this
would need to be done for the rest of his life or the skin infection would return.
It was decided that surgery would be performed to reconstruct Dozer's tail when he was in to be neutered. To add to Dozer's list of problems he was a
cryptorchid, one of his testicles never descended fully into his scrotum. It was still somewhere in his abdomen.
During surgery the end of Dozer's tail was removed along with the extra skin
folds effectively eliminating the condition causing his chronic dermatitis. One of Dozer's testicles was removed in the routine manner and the other was removed from his abdomen.
Dozer recovered from surgery in record time and is doing wonderfully at home. He and his owners are thankful to have his tagging tail problem resolved.
