"Rosco P. Kitty" Hebel - February's Pet of the Month

Rosco P. Kitty catches a snooze"Rosco " an 11 year old neutere d male domest ic short hair cat was visiting for his annual physica l exam during which it was immediately noted that he had lost 4 lbs. since his last years visit. His owner reported that he had also begun to drink a lot of water recently.

Blood tests and a urinalysis confirmed a diagnosis of diabetes mellitis. Cats can be quite difficult to regulate on insulin due to their varied responses to the several different types of insulin. In addition "Rosco" was an indoor/outdoor cat with a varied diet and an independent attitude adding to the difficulty of regulation.

It took a special diet, two changes of insulin types and a lot of fine tuning of insulin dosages over the next ten weeks to regulate "Rosco". During that time he experienced several setbacks including one overnight stay in the hospital due to a diabetic coma, and another weekend stay at a Heritage veterinarian's home to aid in insulin regulation. Through it all, "Rosco P. Kitty" has remained a lovable and inquisitive feline who can't wait to go exploring this spring.
