Pet of the Month February 2001 Snuffy February being a short month we have decided to feature
a non-active case for Pet of the Month. Many people have inquired about the photo of the white canine used as a "click here" label for our website. His name was Snuffy, a
loveable purebred white Collie owned by Dr. Dan Oberschlake's family.
Early in life, besides being a companion to Dr. Dan, his wife, and four children, he was a blood donor for many sick and injured patients seen at Heritage Animal Hospital. His donations saved several
accident victims and puppies infected with parvo virus. He was also credited with preventing a tragedy in the Oberschlake home when he alerted Dr. Dan in the middle of the night that one of the children had
gotten his head wrapped in a blanket and had a leg and arm caught through the bars of the crib and couldn't free himself. His best non human friend was a cat named Goldie that he enjoyed sleeping with and taking on walks.
Snuffy was destined to be a Veterinarian's
dog, as he developed several chronic illnesses over his lifetime. He took daily medication for hyypothyroidism since he was 3 years old. He also developed imfalmmatory bowel disease when he
was 7 years old. When he was 9 years old he developed Osteoarthritis. He was one of the first dogs that was placed on Rimadyl long term. In 1998 Snuffy succumbed to Lymphoma at 13 years of age.
Dr. Dan still keeps a locket of Snufy's white hair in his desk as a reminder of his life and the importance of the human-animal bond.
