July Pet of the Month
"Joy" Schabo

Joy Schabo

Joy Poses for the camera.

Joy Schabo, a three year old miniature dachshund was presented in labor of several hours duration.  Examination found her cervix to be fully dilated with an intact placenta present.  The placental membranes were ruptured and a puppy was found in a breech presentation (tail first).  The puppy was manipulated to present hind legs and was delivered alive.

After 45 minutes another puppy was felt still in the uterus ahead of the cervix, but was upside down.  After 2 injections of oxytocin (pitocin) she was still unable to bring the puppy into a position that could be manipulated.

A cesarean section was elected and another three live puppies were delivered surgically.

Joy Schabo

Joy, her 3 sons and daughter.

Joy and her three new sons and a daughter all recovered uneventfully.
