"Briar" Perry is an 11 year old German Shorthair
Canine Gentleman that has experienced several health dilemmas over the last 2 years.Initially, he presented with a colitis which has been nicely controlled with daily medication.
During a routine follow up physical for his colitis it was noted that he had an enlarged prostate which is unusual for a neutered male. While he was not having any related problems it was
advised that this be closely monitored. Two months later a mild heart murmur was noted. Also an internal lymph node was enlarged and the prostate was no longer symmetrical.
A urinalysis, blood samples and x-rays were
ordered. These tests revealed either an abscess or cancer of the prostate. A urine culture was done and Briar was started on an antibiotic that concentrates in the prostate. An
ultrasound guided biopsy thankfully revealed no cancer and he responded well to 30 days of antiobiotic therapy.
Briar has also developed osteoarthritis but is responding well to the
newer arthritis medications.
As our companions age we are often confronted with chronic or life threatening illness. Briar is a great example of our abilities with
newer diagnostic techniques and therapeutics to maintain a good quality of life in many senior animals. Although Briar has occasionally contemplated retirement he has still been able to make his annual
hunting trip to Kansas during the last 2 seasons.
