"Jake" Walter a 7-year-old male Golden Retriever was presented with anorexia and weakness. Upon physical exam it was noted that
he had a low-grade fever and seemed a bit sore all over. He seemed wobbly and painful over the hips.Radiographs (X-rays) were ordered. They revealed sever hip
dysplasia with arthritis of the spine. It was noted that the bone density was decreased in several areas of the spine and pelvis.
Bloodwork revealed an elevated protein and an extremely high
calcium level. Elevated calcium values can often be a sign of malignancy. He was immediately started on intravenous fluids in hopes of reducing the life threatening effects of toxic calcium levels.
Further diagnostics were then ordered. Protein electrophoresis and a bone marrow biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma (a type of immune cell cancer).
With a very guarded prognosis, "Jake's" owners decided to give Chemotherapy a chance. Within a week "Jake" made a remarkable recovery from near death.
Three months into his chemo he is an active, playful, happy guy. It is hoped that we can give him many more months of quality time with his dedicated and loving family.
