Levi Van Ornum a 5 year old male German Shepherd, had been missing from his yard for five days. He was found with a large infected wound
that was dripping blood from his right rear leg. He would not bear weight on the leg. He also had diarrhea with maggot infestation around his rectum. Radiographs revealed gunshot fragments, but no
fractures to the bone.Levi was treated with IV fluids for shock and dehydration, and the wounds flushed and packed. He was placed
on antibiotics. The maggots were manually removed, and the area treated with insecticide.
When his vital signs were more stable he was anesthetized and the wound
debrided. (Removed devitalized and contaminated tissue) Drains were placed in the leg wound, and a partial closure was made.
The wound was flushed daily, antibiotics and pain medication were continued.
Despite a lot of muscle loss; the nursing care by our staff and his dedicated owners enabled Levi to regain near normal function within 6 weeks of his injury.
Despite what some might describe as a fearsome appearance, Levi always seemed to know we were helping him, and soon became a clinic favorite.
After recovery he was neutered and an underground fencing system was installed. He is content now being a stay-at-home dog, and is only available for phone consultations.
